National Honor Society

The University School chapter of the National Honor Society is active in many school and community service projects throughout the school year. New members (grade 10 or 12) are selected by the Faculty Council each spring based on evaluation of their scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students who have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.50 at the end of the first semester will receive a student activity information form. To be considered for membership, students must first complete this form which requires that they:

  1. complete, document, and submit their grade-level community service hours
  2. show verification of at least 2 documented instances of leadership, at least one of which is in school
  3. show evidence of participation in school activities during high school
  4. are of high moral and ethical character
  5. sign a personal statement that he or she will actively support the University School honor code

Once inducted into the National Honor Society, a student must meet minimum requirements to remain a member in good standing. To maintain membership, students must:

  1. attend all NHS meetings
  2. maintain a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.50
  3. uphold the standards for which they were inducted
  4. complete, submit, and document their grade-level community service requirement
  5. complete six additional NHS-approved service hours each semester
  6. sign a personal statement that he or she will actively support the University School honor code

Art Honor Society

The National Art Honor Society recognizes students who have shown outstanding ability in art. Membership is based on art scholarship, service, and character. Candidates must be in grades 10, 11, or 12 and have completed one semester of art in high school with a B average or higher. Members may remain active when they are not enrolled in an art class. Continued membership requires attendance at all meetings, participation in all art related activities each semester, and a record free of disciplinary infractions.

English Honor Society

The English Honor Society invites juniors and seniors who have attained a 90 or above in English Honors or have enrolled in an AP English class. Members must participate in the newspaper publication, submit two articles to the literary magazine, and devote specific hours to the writing workshops. Members must sign a personal statement that they will support the school honor code. Students will be dismissed for any infraction of the school honor code.

French Honor Society

La Société Honoraire de Français is an honor society for students in grades 10, 11, and 12 who are enrolled in French 2 or higher. Invited students must maintain an A- average in French and a B- average overall. Once inducted, students must maintain their grades, attend all meetings, and participate in at least three French-related activities per semester. Members must sign a personal statement that they will support the school honor code. Students will be dismissed for any infraction of the school honor code.

Mathematics Honor Society

The University School chapter of the National Mathematics Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, is active in many interschool mathematics competitions throughout the year. New members are selected by the faculty sponsor each spring based on curriculum and scholarship.

To qualify and maintain membership, students must currently be enrolled in their third sequential college-preparatory mathematics course. Furthermore, students must have a minimum A- cumulative grade point average overall and a minimum A- unweighted cumulative grade point average in their college-preparatory mathematics courses taken previously.
Requirements:

  1. A- average overall
  2. A- cumulative average for high school courses
  3. must have completed two full years of high school math
  4. are of moral and ethical character

Music Honor Society

The Tri-M Music Honor Society fosters a greater continued interest and a desire for excellence in music performance. Members encourage appreciation and awareness in listening to music, promote wider opportunities for sharing joy through music both within the school and within the community, advance the spirit of good music and musical knowledge, and enhance the reputation of the school as a center for musical enrichment.

Spanish Honor Society

La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica accepts students from grades 10-12 who are in Spanish II through Spanish AP, have maintained at least a 90 percent average in Spanish in Upper School, and have the recommendation of their Upper School Spanish teachers. The group meets biweekly and sponsors cultural activities for its members and for Spanish classes. Members also tutor younger Spanish students and volunteer in local community organizations for Hispanics. The society raises funds to support needy children in South American and holds an annual drive to buy books for children in Nicaragua. Members must sign a personal statement that they will support the school’s honor code. Students will be dismissed for any infraction of the school’s honor code.
