Introduction to Middle School Life

This week long program is designed to help students transition from fifth to sixth grade with as much comfort as possible. Areas of focus include logistical concerns such as building layout, how to navigate transitions between classes, and using lockers and textbooks, as well as important middle school skills in reading, note - taking, studying, and test-taking strategies. In addition, students will receive instruction in all facets of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, writing, and revising their composition. Completion of this program will allow students to enter middle school comfortable with their surroundings and expectations.

English 7

This refresher course reviews 7th grade English and is designed for students who wish to develop a stronger English foundation and/or were unsuccessful in this course during the 2008-2009 school year.  Grammar, vocabulary, literary elements, and writing concepts and applications are reviewed and reinforced.

English 8

This refresher course reviews 8th grade English and is designed for students who wish to develop a stronger English foundation for high school and/or were less than successful in this course during the 2008-2009 school year. Grammar, vocabulary, literary elements, and writing concepts and applications are reviewed and reinforced.

Math 7

This refresher course covers mathematical concepts introduced in 7th grade math in small group settings with an emphasis on individualized instruction. The target group is students who were less than successful in Math 7.Topics may include operations with integers, properties of the real number system, exponents, graphing, and an introduction to polynomials and polynomial expressions.

Math 8

This refresher course covers mathematical concepts introduced in Pre-Algebra and is designed for students who do not experience success in 8th grade math. The focus is on preparing students for success in Algebra I. Pre-Algebra and introductory algebraic concepts are reviewed and reinforced. The language of algebra is stressed as is the development of each student’s competency with the real number system. The class size is limited in order to focus on individualized instruction.

Algebra I Readiness

This course introduces students to specific algebraic concepts so the students are better able to understand and apply the material covered during the school year in Algebra I. A small class along with individualized instruction help students learn and apply the concepts to real-life situations. This course is designed for students entering Algebra I as 8th graders during the following school year.

Algebra Camp

This week-long workshop offers students an introduction and/or refresher of basic algebraic and pre-algebra concepts. Topics covered include the language of algebra, order of operations, linear equations, graphing relations and functions, linear inequalities, polynomials, factoring, quadratic and exponential functions, radical and rational expressions, and statistics and probabilities. This course is designed for rising 6th and 7th grade students.

Spanish Immersion Boot Camp

This week-long program offers students an introduction and/or refresher of the basic concepts in order to help them transition into Spanish 8 or Spanish 2. Areas of focus will include present tense verb conjugations, subject and object pronouns, sentence constructions, and the use of adjectives. Students will also review Spanish vocabulary by writing skits and by participating in games.

Writing Advantage

This week-long course will focus on polishing a student’s ability to write effectively. Students will respond to WrAP and SAT-type prompts, while improving their compositional skills and reinforcing fundamental writing mechanics. Each student will receive personalized feedback on his or her writing, and the class will emphasize the entirety of the writing process: brainstorming, planning, drafting, editing, and revising. An excellent course both for students who want to improve their skills and for those who want to stay sharp over the summer!

CRISS - Creating Independence through Student - Owned Strategies

This course will expose middle-school students to a variety of CRISS strategies designed to help students organize and learn material in ways that best fit their individual learning style. Individual skills and group strategies will be introduced and practiced. Students will master proven strategies they can incorporate into any or all of their academic classes. A student manual is provided.

Chess

Chess players will learn the basics and strategies of chess through individual lessons, practice tournaments, computer based instruction, and fun activities.

Media Production

Students will enjoy working with sound, video and special effects in this hands-on class. Learn how to import or capture photos to edit and prepare for a final project. What is a presentation without audio or music? Learn how to compose music and sound effects for a professional presentation. Once it’s all together, we’ll get out the popcorn! It’s Showtime!

Math Enrichment for Rising 6th Grade Students

This Math Enrichment Course provides opportunities for review and reinforcement of math skills for students entering grade 6th. Topics such as long division, fractions, applied problem solving, and measurement, are covered in this course.

Math Enrichment for Rising 7th Grade Students

This Math Enrichment Course provides opportunities for review and reinforcement of math skills for students entering grade 7th. Topics such as operations with signed-numbers including fractions and decimals, as well as applied problem solving, are covered in this course.

Math Enrichment for Rising Pre-Algebra Students

This Math Enrichment Course provides opportunities for review and reinforcement of math skills for students entering Pre-Algebra in grades 6, 7, and 8. Topics such as operations with signed-numbers including fractions and decimals, graphing, percents, and applied problem solving, are covered in this course.

Math Enrichment for Rising Algebra Students

This Math Enrichment Course provides opportunities for review and reinforcement of Pre-Algebra skills for students entering Algebra 1 in grades 7 and 8. Topics such as solving multi-step equations, graphing inequalities, simplifying variable expressions, and exponents, are covered in this course.

Summer Reading Assignment Workshop: Rising Grade 6

This workshop is tailored to meet the needs of rising 6thgrade students who would benefit from teacher directed class instruction in completing the written summer reading assignment. Students are expected to have read both of the summer reading books and to bring the books to class. The goal is to promote higher order thinking skills in both oral and written expression of thoughts. All students will complete their summer reading assignment during the class week.
