The Lower School participates in a nationally renowned, interactive, reading achievement program called Reading Counts.  This program is available on all of our school’s computers as an enrichment to our reading program.  Through independent reading, students improve vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills.  Students read a wide variety of good quality children’s books and take a computerized quiz that will assess whether the child has completed and understood the book.

A management system tracks the student’s reading and performance.  Teachers can utilize the information to analyze the student’s reading comprehension and make recommendations that will encourage success.  Along the way, certificates and other small incentives are provided to keep the student motivated to learn. Check the Reading Counts Book List for a list of books that are part of the Reading Counts program.  This list also provides the book’s reading level and point value.  Most of these books are available at the Lower School Library and many are available at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research & Information Technology Center on the NSU campus, or at your local bookstore.
