“Raiders End Suns’ Season”

In their first season in sanctioned play, the girls lacrosse team did quite well.  The Suns finished with an overall record of six wins and five losses.  All five of the Suns’ losses were to very good teams.

Despite falling to St. Thomas Aquinas 12-4 in the first round of the District Tournament, the girls displayed quality play all season long.  In her final game as a Sun, senior Ariel Guilder netted two goals.  Junior Demi Marks also had two goals.  Junior Jackie Chayet played yet another strong game, playing low defense, and keeping the Suns alive.

The Suns will miss their seniors of Ariel Guilder, Izzy Proia, Jillian Goldstein, Ali Sherberg, and Jessie Himmelstern.  However, despite losing several key players, the Suns return several very talented underclassmen in Lauren Vidal, Jackie Chayet, Stephanie Gore, Rachael Kliger, and Jessica Parker, just to name a few.

Congratulations to the girls as they should be recognized for their hard work throughout the spring 2008 season.  Good luck as you prepare for 2009!

“Suns Go Out Fighting”

Curtains fell on the regular season as the Suns hosted Pine Crest in the finale losing 7-3. It should be noted that Pine Crest is one of the top teams in the district and the game was closer than the score indicates.

The Suns were offensive minded early and controlled the ball and the action in the opening 10 minutes. Ariel Guilder extended the Suns streak of scoring the game’s first goal with a beautiful pass from Demi Marks and Pine Crest was down 1-0. Morgan Barry scored on a pass from Marks followed by a creative left-side crease-roll and a behind the back shot for the Suns’ second goal.

Those in the “know” understand that holding Pine Crest to three goals in a half and seven to a game means defense. Defense means turnovers and the team dialed in 13 steals and rode some serious goal keeping from Jessica Parker, who turned away 16 high-caliber shots and added two steals of her own, on her way to receiving game ball honors.

The Suns were close. With nine minutes to play and down 4-3, it was the Pine Crest defense that won the game. Holding the Suns to five shots in the closing half and only one goal courtesy of a Barry left-side crease-roll and a behind the back shot, the sun finally set on the Suns’ regular season.
